Vitiligo is a basically a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes cells are not able to produce melanin pigment and thus results in whiteness of the skin. This white skin is due to destruction of melanocyte. Any part on the body can get affected, and most people with vitiligo have white patches in many areas of the body. This patches can continue to grow for number of years.
As per United States statistics, 1 to 2 million people are suffering from this disorder. Most people develop vitiligo before age 20. Vitiligo disorder affects both sexes and all races equally.Researchers have strong evidence that vitiligo is an inherited disease and people with vitiligo inherit a group of three genes that make them susceptible to depigmentation. However vitiligo is an autoimmune disease.
TYPES OF VITILIGO TREATMENT
There are various kind of treatments available for Vitiligo.
Vitiligo Surgery : In this kind of surgery Autologous skin grafts are used. Skin from one area of the body is surgically transplanted to an area affected by vitiligo. The transplanted skin patch matches with skin color but it does not covers the new patches developed by the Vitiligo. It is a costly procedure and requires precision and perfection by the cosmetic surgeon.
Melanocyte Transplant :Melanocytes are harvested and immediately transplanted after dermabrasion on to the depigmented patch so that melanocyte cells are still alive. The results may start coming after 3-6 weeks but excellent results are only seen after 5-6 months of the treatment. It may require more that one sitting.
Vitiligo Treatment with UVB :This method of vitiligo treatment has been one of the most promising alternatives for patients suffering with vitiligo. Various research suggests that treatment with UVB light is very effective in treatment of vitiligo. UVB phototherapy is conducted through irradiation with short wave ultraviolet radiation under controlled environment.
